LUMC researchers have made a surprising discovery that changes our understanding of how cells work. They show that reading genes and copying DNA can happen at the same time on the same piece of DNA thanks to the protein CFAP20. This protein keeps both processes on track. Without CFAP20 chaos arises: the DNA becomes damaged or sloppy copies are made, which in turn can lead to cancer. The study results have been published in the prestigious journal Nature.
